Congress Critiques PM Modi's Historic Address to Israeli Knesset
PM Modi's Address Sparks Controversy
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, he delivered a significant speech to the Knesset, which has drawn sharp criticism from the Congress party. In his address, Modi highlighted the strong ties between India and Israel, mentioning a personal coincidence: he was born on September 17, 1950—the same day India formally recognized Israel. He expressed, 'I have always felt a connection to this land. After all, I was born on the same day India officially recognized Israel—September 17, 1950!'
In response, Congress challenged this statement within a historical context. Senior Congress leader and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X to comment, stating, 'PM Modi's address to the Knesset was a blatant defense of his host. He pointed out that India recognized Israel on the same day he was born.'
Ramesh further elaborated, 'In fact, on June 13, 1947, Albert Einstein wrote to Jawaharlal Nehru regarding the establishment of Israel. A month later, Nehru responded to Einstein. They met on November 5, 1949, at Einstein's home in Princeton.'
He detailed the relationship between Nehru and Einstein, noting that in November 1952, Einstein was offered the presidency of Israel, which he declined. Before his passing in April 1955, Einstein and Nehru exchanged letters concerning nuclear explosions and weapons.
Citing Nehru's letter from July 11, 1947, Ramesh pointed out that Nehru expressed sympathy for the Jewish people while also voicing concerns about the situation of Arab Palestinians. He emphasized that Nehru advocated for respecting the sentiments of both sides and refrained from imposing a unilateral solution. Congress's response characterizes PM Modi's speech as 'one-sided' and a 'defense of his host,' stressing the importance of historical balance.
This controversy has reignited discussions about the history of India-Israel relations. While India recognized Israel on September 17, 1950, full diplomatic relations were only established in 1992. Modi's address to the Knesset marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister spoke before the Israeli parliament, reiterating India's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and expressing unwavering solidarity with Israel.
