Congress Critiques BJP's March on Democracy, Calls for Accountability
Congress Challenges BJP's Commitment to Democracy
In Dharamshala, Congress spokesperson Puneet Malli has criticized the BJP's recent "Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy" march, labeling it as a superficial political stunt. He raised concerns about the BJP's lack of action regarding voter rights and electoral integrity.
Malli stated that while the BJP promotes slogans about safeguarding democracy, it is essential for them to clarify who will ensure the protection of citizens' voting rights, which are fundamental to a democratic society. He emphasized that democracy is fortified not merely through rallies and slogans but through the conduct of free and fair elections, the presence of independent institutions, transparent processes, and the safeguarding of every eligible citizen's voting rights.
He acknowledged that the Congress party supports the cleansing of electoral rolls and the elimination of fraudulent voter registrations. However, he insisted that these processes must be executed with full transparency, accountability, and in accordance with established legal frameworks. He expressed that raising concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process should not be misconstrued as an act of anarchy but rather as a democratic obligation to protect citizens' rights.
Accountability Questions for the BJP
Malli posed critical questions regarding accountability, asking who would be responsible if eligible voters' names were removed from the electoral rolls. He also sought clarification on the specific measures that would be implemented to assist vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, migrant workers, economically disadvantaged individuals, and residents of remote areas, who might struggle with documentation or procedural requirements.
Addressing Public Concerns
Malli urged BJP MPs, MLAs, and other leaders to focus on addressing significant public issues rather than relying solely on political rhetoric. He called on the ruling party to tackle pressing matters such as inflation, unemployment, rural development challenges, and the daily struggles faced by citizens.
He asserted that questioning government policies and institutional processes is a vital function of the opposition in a democracy, while it is the duty of governments and constitutional bodies to provide clear and transparent responses to public inquiries.
