Congress Criticizes Government Over China's Mediation Claims in India-Pakistan Tensions
Congress MP's Strong Rebuttal to China's Claims
Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh has sharply criticized the central government following claims made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi regarding China's role in mediating the India-Pakistan standoff. Ramesh described these assertions as a "mockery" of India's national security.
This comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated assertions that Washington has prevented a potential war between India and Pakistan. Following the four-day conflict during Operation Sindoor, China has also claimed to have played a role in de-escalating tensions.
In a social media post, Ramesh expressed concern over China's claims, especially given Beijing's close defense ties with Pakistan and its provision of arms to Islamabad.
Trump's Claims and China's Involvement
The Congress leader noted that President Trump has long claimed he personally intervened to halt Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025, making this assertion at least 65 times across various international platforms. Prime Minister Modi has remained silent on these claims made by his so-called close ally.
Now, with the Chinese Foreign Minister echoing similar claims of mediation, Ramesh pointed out that on July 4, 2025, Army Vice Chief Lieutenant General Rahul Singh publicly stated that India was indeed confronting and fighting against China during Operation Sindoor. Given China's evident support for Pakistan, the claims of mediation are troubling, as they contradict the assurances given to the Indian populace and seem to undermine national security.
Demand for Clarification from the Government
Furthermore, Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he has engaged in discussions with China on their terms. He has also called for clarification from the government regarding the Chinese Foreign Minister's statements.
This situation must be viewed in the context of our relations with China, which have recently been re-established, albeit on Chinese terms. Modi's granting of a 'clean chit' to China on June 19, 2020, has significantly weakened India's negotiating position. Our trade deficit has reached record highs, and most of our exports are dependent on imports from China. Provocative actions by China concerning Arunachal Pradesh continue unabated. Amidst such one-sided and hostile relations, the Indian public deserves clarity on China's role in the sudden cessation of Operation Sindoor.
