Congress Leader's Strong Remarks in Upper Assam

Guwahati/Jorhat, Feb 28: In a pointed critique of the ruling BJP as the Assembly elections approach, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the state government of disregarding Assamese cultural heritage.

Speaking at the party's Samay Paribartan Yatra in Demow, Upper Assam, which saw significant attendance from party supporters, Gogoi emphasized the importance of preserving Assam's cultural identity.

He stated, “Our campaign is centered on safeguarding Assamese culture. In contrast, the BJP aims to introduce external influences. The people of Assam are turning to Congress. Upon our return to power, our first action will be to seek justice in the Zubeen Garg case.”

Gogoi further claimed that the government has not honored the legacy of the late cultural figure, Zubeen Garg.

“Currently, the Zubeen Kshetra remains undeveloped. While the Chief Minister is preoccupied with campaigning, the site is left unattended. Family members have had to clean the area themselves, showcasing the government's lack of dedication,” he remarked.

Indicating potential political shifts, Gogoi mentioned that the party leadership would make final decisions regarding alliances.

“There may be opportunities for partnerships. Whatever the high command decides, we will support that candidate. Our main goal is to defeat the BJP and instigate change in Assam,” he added.

As the elections draw near, Congress has ramped up its efforts, particularly in Upper Assam, renewing its focus on Jorhat, a traditional stronghold, and launching the Samay Paribartan Yatra on Friday.

Gogoi also criticized the BJP's welfare initiatives, alleging that they confine rather than empower women.

“Women in Assam are being restricted under the guise of schemes. To access benefits, they must attend political events. During our administration, programs were implemented without ulterior motives. Today, there is undue pressure and political meddling,” he stated.

He noted that escalating prices and household pressures have further burdened women.

“Instead of fostering opportunities in silk and weaving, the government offers Rs 1,250. Women seek sustainable livelihoods, not mere token gestures,” Gogoi asserted.

He pledged that Congress would prioritize women's empowerment and job creation if elected.

“We aim to dismantle the constraints placed on women and mothers. Our vision is for a new Assam founded on dignity and opportunity,” he concluded.

Gogoi also pointed out the rising crime rates, suggesting they are being underreported.

“To present a decrease in crime nationally, cases are not being filed. Women are being denied justice,” he claimed.

He directed criticism at the Chief Minister, referencing recent court notices issued to him.

“Why are courts repeatedly sending notices to the Chief Minister? A leader should exemplify the law. Instead, we witness ongoing violations,” Gogoi remarked.

Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia, who participated in the event, condemned the BJP government for its health and welfare policies.

“The BJP's schemes are merely election-driven. The state has cut health budget allocations. This is alarming, especially as women face issues like anaemia and malnutrition,” he stated.

He questioned the government's emphasis on financial schemes without bolstering health infrastructure.

“If health is compromised, how can people achieve economic strength? The government speaks of creating millionaires, yet neglects basic health and nutrition,” Saikia added.

He accused the ruling party of failing to deliver on key electoral promises related to rehabilitation and job creation.

The Samay Paribartan Yatra, which commenced in Titabor, the constituency of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, is being promoted as a mass outreach initiative.

Congress leaders stated that this effort aims to reconnect with grassroots supporters and present an alternative vision.

“It is my responsibility to heed the voices of grassroots Congress members. Their morale must remain high. Only a robust Congress can effect genuine change in Assam,” Gogoi emphasized.

He added that the yatra would focus on restoring humanity, fortifying institutions, and fostering inclusive development.

“Through this journey, we are sharing the vision of a new Assam with every household—an Assam grounded in dignity, harmony, and justice,” he concluded.

Senior leaders, including Ripun Bora, also participated in the rally as the party intensified its campaign in Upper Assam ahead of the elections.
