Congress Alliance Prepares for Assam Assembly Election Results
Congress Leaders Meet Ahead of Election Results
Senior Congress observers, including Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh, convened with coalition partners on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming election results on May 4. The Congress party has formed an alliance with five parties, including Raijor Dal, Assam Ethnic Council (AJP), CPI(M), APHLC, and CPI(ML), to contest the assembly elections. Following the meeting, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi stated that there is a consensus within the alliance to form the next government in Assam.
Gogoi Dismisses Exit Poll Predictions
Gogoi rejected the exit polls predicting a comfortable majority for the BJP, claiming they are an attempt by the ruling party to create a favorable atmosphere. He emphasized that discussions revealed that the people of Assam, including farmers, youth, and women, have cast their votes for a new government. The results will be announced on May 4, and he urged vigilance over the strong room, stating that everyone must be prepared for the counting day. He asserted that the BJP's efforts to manipulate the atmosphere through exit polls would not ensnare them.
Shivakumar Expresses Confidence in Congress Victory
As an election observer, D.K. Shivakumar also dismissed the exit polls, suggesting that voters are hesitant to express their true preferences due to fear of the ruling party. He expressed confidence in the Congress team, stating they are strong, united, and self-assured, having conducted a commendable campaign. He personally does not trust the media's portrayal of the exit polls, citing a significant level of fear among Assam's voters. He noted that even those not aligned with the BJP have not received any free gifts, raising questions about who would openly disclose their voting choices under such circumstances.
Shivakumar Claims BJP Leaders Are Reaching Out
Shivakumar expressed optimism about a Congress victory, claiming that some BJP leaders have reached out to Congress in light of potential losses. He stated that they have complete faith in their internal surveys. Meanwhile, they have gathered substantial information from the BJP side, having met with candidates, including MLAs and ministers, who seem to have lost confidence in winning the elections. Some of these individuals are reportedly trying to connect with Congress leaders, candidates, and allies.
