Congress Accuses Election Commission of Bias After Kharge's Controversial Remarks on Modi
Congress Raises Concerns Over Election Commission's Actions
New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Congress party criticized the Election Commission for issuing a stern notice to its president, Mallikarjun Kharge, regarding his comments labeling Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a terrorist. The party claims this action indicates that the Commission is acting as an extension of the Union Home Ministry, undermining constitutional integrity.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress's general secretary for communications, expressed his views following the Election Commission's serious response to Kharge's remarks, demanding an explanation within 24 hours.
Ramesh stated that the Election Commission has been influenced by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, alleging that it has previously facilitated electoral fraud, particularly in West Bengal. He emphasized that the Commission's actions represent a constitutional violation and hold the Chief Election Commissioner accountable.
The notice from the Election Commission arrived just before the polling in Tamil Nadu and the initial phase of elections in West Bengal.
Earlier, Kharge accused Modi of using government resources to intimidate political opponents, which drew sharp criticism from the BJP, who condemned Kharge's labeling of Modi.
During a press conference in Chennai, Kharge referred to Modi as a terrorist while discussing the AIADMK's alliance with the BJP, questioning how a party with roots in Dravidian ideologies could align with Modi.
He remarked, 'How can these AIADMK members, who honor Annadurai, join forces with Modi? He is a terrorist who does not believe in equality or justice.'
When pressed for clarification, Kharge explained that he was referring to Modi's actions as terrorizing the democratic framework of the nation, asserting, 'He is misusing his authority and government resources to undermine opposition parties.'
