Jorhat, July 17: In Teok, community members have raised concerns regarding the substantial investment made by the Teok Municipal Board in civic machinery and sanitation tools, which have reportedly remained unused for an extended period. This situation has led to questions about the effective use of public funds and the overall operations of the municipality.
According to local residents, various high-tech sanitation tools, including a drain-cleaning machine, a JCB excavator, and mobile toilets, were acquired to enhance civic services but are now sitting idle within the municipal yard. Many of these machines are showing signs of rust and decay due to exposure to the elements, having never been utilized as intended.
Despite the availability of specialized equipment, locals express frustration as drains in Teok remain blocked, leading to stagnant water and unpleasant odors in several areas.
One resident remarked, "We were informed that a modern machine was bought for drain cleaning, yet we have never witnessed its use in the town. The new JCB is seldom seen performing any civic duties."
The sight of costly machinery lying unused has intensified local frustration, especially as sanitation issues continue to disrupt daily life.
Many residents noted that the equipment is now covered in rust and surrounded by overgrown vegetation after being left exposed to rain and weather for too long.
These allegations have raised concerns about the municipality's procurement processes. Although no formal evidence was provided, some residents suspect that public funds are being spent on machinery that is not being utilized effectively.
Another local expressed, "Whenever new machines are purchased with taxpayer money, there are suspicions of kickbacks. The equipment often remains unused until it deteriorates, prompting the purchase of more machines. If this is the case, an investigation is warranted."
While residents are not against the municipality's investment in modern equipment, they question why such machinery is not being utilized given the ongoing sanitation issues in the town.
They have called on the authorities to either put the equipment to use or provide a public explanation for its prolonged inactivity.
Additionally, locals have reached out to Teok MLA Bikash Saikia, urging him to step in and ensure that the machinery is effectively utilized.
"Teok has faced civic challenges for years. We hope our MLA, Bikash Saikia, will address this issue and ensure these machines are finally put to work. Authorities should also investigate why they have remained idle for so long," a resident stated.
