Concerns Rise Over Noida International Airport's Flight Costs

The Noida International Airport, set to open soon, is facing scrutiny over its flight pricing compared to Delhi's IGI Airport. With significantly higher parking and user development fees, both airlines and passengers are worried about increased travel costs. Experts warn that these expenses could deter travelers from choosing Jewar Airport, especially given Delhi's established connectivity. Indigo Airlines has raised concerns about the fee structure, questioning the airport's current connectivity options. As domestic flights are set to begin on June 15, the future of international flights remains uncertain. This situation raises critical questions for travelers in the region about their airport choices.

Noida International Airport Controversy

The much-anticipated Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, has sparked a new debate in Uttar Pradesh. Initially seen as a cost-effective and convenient option for residents of Delhi NCR, concerns are now emerging about potentially high flight prices. Reports indicate that both airlines and passengers are worried, as parking fees, user development fees, and other charges at Jewar Airport are significantly higher compared to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Rising Parking Fees Raise Alarm

According to sources, the parking fee for an Airbus A321 at Noida International Airport is set at approximately ₹14,500 for six hours, while the same fee at Delhi's IGI Airport is around ₹6,900. This means that parking costs at Jewar Airport could be nearly double that of Delhi. Additionally, it has been reported that Jewar Airport's parking fees are also higher than those at Mumbai Airport. Airlines have expressed that increased operational costs will directly impact ticket prices, leading to higher fares for passengers.

User Development Fees Impacting Passengers

Reports suggest that the user development fee for domestic flights at Noida Airport is proposed at ₹653, compared to just ₹129 at Delhi Airport, indicating a staggering 406% increase. The user development fees for international flights are also reported to be significantly higher at Jewar. Airlines have stated that if these fees remain, they could incur additional costs amounting to crores annually.

Experts Warn of Competitive Disadvantages

Experts believe that airlines may pass on these additional costs to passengers, resulting in increased ticket prices. This could hinder Jewar Airport's competitiveness, especially since Delhi's IGI Airport already boasts established connectivity with metro, expressways, buses, and rail services. In contrast, Jewar Airport is still in its early stages, lacking adequate public transport options. Consequently, residents of Noida and surrounding areas face a crucial question: if reaching Delhi Airport is easier and cheaper, why would they choose to fly from Jewar at a higher cost?

Airlines Voice Their Concerns

Reports indicate that Indigo Airlines has written to the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority expressing concerns over the fee structure at Jewar Airport, which they find excessively high compared to Delhi. They also raised questions about the airport's connectivity, which is still under development, including the metro rapid rail and other public transport facilities. The airport administration has stated that no final date has been set yet, and currently, temporary fees are in place, with the final decision pending from the regulatory authority. They claim that the fees are in line with other major airports in the country and that improvements for passenger convenience and infrastructure are underway.

Domestic Flights Set to Launch Soon

According to airport management, domestic flights from Noida International Airport are expected to commence on June 15, with initial routes to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, and other cities. However, passengers will have to wait for international flights, as construction of the international terminal is still ongoing, with completion anticipated by September. After obtaining security clearance, international flights will begin. Experts hope that the airport will serve as a significant asset for millions in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and western Uttar Pradesh. However, if ticket prices remain high, travelers may revert to using Delhi Airport, especially those who already benefit from better metro connectivity.
