Guwahati, July 26: On World IVF Day, fertility experts in Assam expressed alarm regarding the rising infertility rates in the region, linking this trend to changing lifestyles, postponed marriages, and late decisions regarding family planning.

Dr. Mujibur Rahman, a fertility expert, pointed out that factors such as substance abuse, hormonal imbalances, unhealthy diets, and tobacco use are significant contributors to male infertility, which includes issues like low sperm count and Azoospermia (absence of sperm). He highlighted that these challenges are evident in both urban and rural communities. The situation in the Northeast is further exacerbated by delays in pregnancy planning, with age being a crucial factor impacting fertility.

Dr. Minakshi Gogoi emphasized the necessity of early pregnancy planning, noting that approximately 20–30% of female patients experience PCOS, while a similar percentage face infertility linked to endometriosis, a condition where uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often causing painful periods. These conditions are increasingly observed in rural populations, suggesting that dietary and lifestyle choices from an early age play a role.

Dr. Ratul Datta mentioned that nearly 30% of individuals seeking IVF treatment have a history of multiple miscarriages, with many being over 35 years old. He stated, “As age increases, the likelihood of repeated miscarriages also rises. We also encounter patients with multiple IVF failures. Advanced techniques like Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), which allows for the assessment of embryos for genetic issues before transfer, can help reduce the rate of repeated IVF failures.”
