Concerns Rise Over Health Services in Rajasthan Hospitals Following Complications in Childbirth Surgeries
Serious Health Issues Arise After Surgeries in Jodhpur
In Rajasthan, the quality of healthcare services in government hospitals is under scrutiny once again. Following incidents in Kota and Bikaner, eight women in Jodhpur have developed severe health complications after undergoing cesarean deliveries, shocking many. The state's health minister has sparked controversy by suggesting that women prefer surgical births to avoid labor pains. Recently, at the district hospital in Jodhpur, these eight women experienced serious health issues, including kidney failure, after their surgeries. They reported excessive bleeding and low blood pressure post-operation. Two of the women suffered from severe kidney infections and were referred to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Hospital Administration Takes Precautionary Measures
In response to the situation, hospital officials have temporarily closed the operating theater as a precaution. Samples have been collected from the operating room for investigation, and all surgical procedures have been suspended until the reports are received. Similar incidents have occurred previously, resulting in the deaths of four women in Kota and two in Bikaner due to complications arising from cesarean deliveries. A team of experts from AIIMS Delhi and other central medical institutions has been tasked with investigating the deaths in Kota, and inquiries have also begun regarding the Bikaner incident.
Details of the Jodhpur Incident
Regarding the Jodhpur case, BS Jodha, the principal of SN Medical College, stated that eight cesarean deliveries were performed on Saturday. He noted that when two women's conditions deteriorated, they were sent to MDM Hospital, while the remaining six continued treatment at the district hospital. One woman experienced severe bleeding, and another, who has diabetes, suffered from low blood pressure and anemia. Such conditions can adversely affect kidney function. Kulbir Chopra, the chief medical officer at the district hospital, confirmed that the six women admitted are currently stable, and no surgeries will be conducted until the reports are available.
Political Repercussions and Reactions
The incident has also gained political traction. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of the eight women post-surgery in Jodhpur. He described the reports of septicemia and kidney complications as alarming, indicating a significant decline in medical standards and serious negligence. Gehlot remarked, "After Kota and Bikaner, the news of eight women’s deteriorating health from Jodhpur is extremely worrying." He accused the administration of prioritizing flashy government events and VIP visits while neglecting the safety of mothers and sisters, suggesting that the health system's flaws are being concealed. Gehlot plans to visit Jodhpur to meet with the affected patients and their families.
Controversial Statements from Health Minister
Meanwhile, Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khivsar's comments regarding the rising number of cesarean deliveries have stirred controversy. He stated that the younger generation prefers to avoid labor pain, leading to an increase in cesarean births. He also mentioned that patients often face difficulties while seeking treatment across various hospitals, resulting in unique circumstances for each case. Khivsar claimed that the maternal mortality rate in the state is only one percent.
