Digboi, Sept 28: There is increasing alarm regarding the unexpected decline of teak trees along a stretch of forest adjacent to National Highway 38 in the Upper Dihing region of Digboi. Local inhabitants and environmental groups are demanding an inquiry into the underlying causes.

The Bogapani forest, previously celebrated for its abundant teak trees, is now witnessing a troubling trend, with numerous trees exhibiting signs of distress and some reportedly perishing.

This alarming situation has sparked concern among community members and environmental advocates, who worry about the potential loss of this vital forest cover if the issue remains unexamined.

The regional committees of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, along with various other organizations, have voiced their concerns regarding the deteriorating state of the teak trees.

“It is disheartening to witness the trees dying. We have played in this area since childhood. We are still trying to understand the reason behind their decline,” remarked the secretary of the Digboi regional committee of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad.

There are also inquiries about whether the Digboi Forest Division has taken sufficient measures to investigate the cause of this decline.

“We urge the Forest Department to look into this issue. Only through an investigation can we uncover what is truly happening,” the secretary added.

The organizations are advocating for a thorough evaluation of the affected trees and the surrounding forest area to ascertain if diseases, environmental factors, or other issues are contributing to the decline.

As of the time of this report, the Digboi Forest Division had not provided any comments regarding the allegations or the status of the teak trees.
