Concerns Rise Over China's Hydropower Project on Brahmaputra River
China's Hydropower Initiative on the Yarlung Tsangpo River
China's ambitious hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, known as the Brahmaputra in India, is under scrutiny as it is situated on an active fault line. This raises alarms about potential landslides, earthquakes, and structural instability, according to geologists, as reported by a leading news outlet. The initiative has sparked concerns in India regarding its possible effects on local communities that rely on the river for their livelihoods.
Insights from the Recent Geological Study
A recent study published in the Chinese-language journal Sedimentary Geology and Tethyan Geology, overseen by the China Geological Survey, highlights these risks. Conducted by experts from Chengdu University of Technology and other institutions, the research emphasizes the need for enhanced slope stability measures and retaining structures to reduce the risk of landslides. The study points out that the Paizhen Fault, which has been active since the Pleistocene epoch, poses significant threats to the integrity of nearby infrastructures, including dams and roads.
The researchers noted that the fault has compromised the surrounding rock formations, diminishing their mechanical strength. This situation increases the vulnerability of engineering projects in the vicinity, making them more prone to damage. They also warned that the area around the reservoir has a loose geological structure, which could lead to severe slope failures, especially after prolonged exposure to water and seismic activity.
India's Vigilant Stance on the Chinese Project
The Indian government has expressed its commitment to closely monitor the developments surrounding China's hydropower project on the Brahmaputra. The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that it is vigilant regarding all activities related to the river, including China's plans for hydropower development. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, emphasized that the government is prepared to take necessary actions to protect the interests and livelihoods of Indian citizens living in downstream regions.
