Growing Anxiety Among Residents

Guwahati, March 18: Recent rumors regarding potential child kidnappers have resurfaced in Guwahati, sparking worry among the local population, especially parents.

Over the past few days, social media has been rife with warnings about suspected child abductors, heightening fears within the community.

These rumors have emerged from various neighborhoods, leading residents to be more vigilant and attentive to the safety of children in their areas.

According to law enforcement, reports of child lifting have been circulating in multiple regions of the state, often spreading quickly via social media, which can lead to unnecessary alarm.

However, police officials have confirmed that there have been no verified incidents of child abduction reported to date.

In response to the situation, authorities issued a public advisory a few days ago, urging citizens to refrain from believing or sharing unverified claims that could incite panic.

“There have been rumors about child abductors circulating again. We ask the public to avoid spreading or sharing false, unverified, or baseless information regarding child lifting. Please do not post or forward such misleading information on social media,” the advisory stated.

“If you come across anyone disseminating fake news or rumors about child lifting, please report it to us or the nearest police station,” the advisory continued.

A senior police official from Guwahati remarked, “To date, we have not received any confirmed reports of child abductors. We urge the community to avoid spreading rumors on social media and to alert the police if they observe any suspicious behavior.”

Recently, a young man was reportedly assaulted by a group of individuals in the Ulubari area after being falsely accused of being a child abductor. The allegations were later proven to be unfounded, and no formal complaint was filed with the Paltan Bazar police regarding the incident.

The spread of these rumors has led to increased anxiety among parents in the city. Many families have expressed that they are now more cautious and advising their children against going out alone.

“We learned about this through WhatsApp groups in our neighborhood. Parents naturally become anxious when such messages circulate. We are keeping a close eye on our children,” shared a resident from the Chandmari area.
