Severe Landslide Blocks Key Highway

The Chamba–Bharmour National Highway (NH-154A) is facing significant issues once again, as a major landslide occurred near Batti Ki Hatti on Friday night, completely obstructing the road. This incident has left many travelers stranded and halted all traffic.

Despite the investment of substantial funds over the years, the highway's condition remains alarming. Residents express frustration, stating that previous administrations have not delivered any meaningful improvements. "Despite spending hundreds of crores, the road continues to be hazardous and unreliable," they remarked.

On Saturday morning, buses departing from Bharmour at 5 a.m. found themselves stuck mid-journey, forcing passengers to endure long delays. Emergency services, including ambulances, were also hindered, complicating the transport of critical patients to Chamba. The highway's frequent landslides and unstable slopes present ongoing dangers, particularly during the monsoon season and adverse weather conditions.

As of Saturday evening, the road had not yet been cleared. Efforts by departmental machinery to remove debris were ongoing, but new landslides continued to obstruct progress. Some travelers resorted to risking a crossing of the Ravi River to reach their destinations, while others attempted to navigate the blocked road on foot.

The situation is particularly urgent as the Kartik Swami Temple in Kugti is set to open its doors on April 14, which is expected to increase the number of pilgrims using this route. Local residents are calling on the government and relevant authorities to implement permanent solutions to ensure safe and reliable access, emphasizing that temporary fixes are insufficient.
