Concerns Raised Over Voter List Purges in West Bengal
Legal Expert Voices Alarm Over Voter List Changes
Prominent lawyer Prashant Bhushan expressed serious concerns on Sunday regarding the extensive removal of names from the voter list in West Bengal under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He warned that this could lead to the loss of other rights for those affected.
According to data released by the Election Commission, approximately 9.1 million voters have had their names removed following the SIR process in West Bengal. During a press conference, Bhushan alleged that these developments indicate a broader attempt to disenfranchise citizens.
He emphasized that the right to vote is fundamental to all other democratic rights, stating, "If the right to vote is taken away, it paves the way for the weakening or elimination of other rights."
Political activist Yogendra Yadav, who was present at the press conference, cautioned that the removal of millions of voters from the list could have repercussions beyond just disenfranchisement, potentially affecting other identity-based rights.
Yadav claimed that those whose names have been removed from the voter list might be among the first to come under scrutiny in other identification systems. He noted, "Today it’s the voter list; tomorrow, questions could be raised about the authenticity of identification documents like Aadhaar. Those already removed from the list could be the first to face issues."
