Concerns Raised Over EVM Malfunctions in West Bengal Elections
Issues with Voting Machines in Baharampur
During the first phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury reported that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were repeatedly malfunctioning at a polling booth in the Baharampur constituency. He expressed that voters were forced to wait for hours in the sweltering heat to cast their votes. Speaking to reporters outside a polling center, he stated, "I've been receiving reports since morning about the EVM issues at booth number 141. I filed a complaint regarding this, and although the EVMs were replaced, there has been no improvement in the situation."
Election Commission's Response
Chowdhury mentioned that the Election Commission had assured him that technicians would be dispatched, but no effective measures had been taken so far. He added, "As a result, I felt compelled to come here. I have also sent a written complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer." Furthermore, he indicated that he had contacted the District Magistrate (DM) regarding the issue, who assured him that efforts were being made to resolve the problem.
Voter Struggles Amid Heat
Chowdhury highlighted the difficulties faced by voters due to the EVM malfunctions. "People are enduring so much trouble in this scorching heat that they are returning home. There is no shade, and voters are waiting in long lines for hours." He particularly emphasized the challenges faced by female voters, stating that they are determined to vote despite the heat. He noted that if they do not vote this time, they might be told next time that they would be deprived of civil rights under SIR due to their absence in the voting process. This fear has motivated many to ensure they cast their votes.
