CPI(M) Voices Serious Concerns on Ethanol Blending Policy

New Delhi, August 7 - The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed significant concerns regarding the central government's ethanol blending policy, claiming it adversely affects consumers, food security, farmers' interests, and environmental sustainability. In a statement, the party's Polit Bureau suggested that drivers should be given the option to choose between ethanol-blended petrol and regular petrol.

The Polit Bureau referenced a recent letter from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to the Ministry of Petroleum, which raised alarms about the potential harms of ethanol-blended fuel (E20). The party asserted that this letter was later retracted under pressure, but the issues it highlighted remain pertinent.

The CPI(M) argued that when the ethanol blending policy was introduced, consumers were assured that ethanol-blended petrol would be cheaper than conventional petrol. However, they claim that E20 is being sold at nearly the same price, while providing lower mileage and causing increased wear on engines.

The statement emphasized that consumers have no alternative but to use blended fuel, despite ongoing concerns regarding vehicle performance and maintenance. The CPI(M) also demanded that the ethanol blending ratio should not exceed 20 percent.
