Concerns Raised Over Electoral Roll Irregularities in Assam

Allegations of Irregularities in Voter Registration

Biswanath, Jan 16: The Assam Minority Student’s Union (AAMSU) has raised alarms regarding significant irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls in the Biswanath district. They claim that numerous living individuals are being incorrectly marked as deceased, resulting in the deletion of their names from the voter list.

The organization has reported these alleged discrepancies from Polling Station No. 133 and the Chuwaguri Panchayat area within the 70 No. Biswanath Assembly constituency.

Election officials have purportedly issued notices to over a hundred minority voters concerning claims and objections that arose during the SR process.

AAMSU contends that these arbitrary objections are being utilized to intimidate minority voters and has asserted that such actions will not be tolerated. They demand that the SR process be executed transparently and fairly, devoid of any religious or communal bias.

Additionally, they have called for the establishment of a special investigation team to closely monitor the activities of Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

“We have noticed that minority voters are facing harassment through claims and objections, with many living individuals being wrongfully declared dead. The SR must be conducted with transparency and fairness, and the Election Commission should closely supervise the BLOs,” stated Nazir Ahmed, General Secretary of AAMSU.

He emphasized that all legitimate Indian citizens should be included in the updated voter list, regardless of their status in the NRC. “Citizens whose names are absent from the NRC but are valid Indian citizens should not be excluded,” Ahmed asserted.

Ahmed also mentioned that a memorandum outlining these issues has already been submitted to the Biswanath District Commissioner.

He cautioned that the unwarranted removal of valid names could incite unrest and urged the state government to avoid creating communal or religious divisions through the SR process.

In response to these concerns, AAMSU Central General Secretary Quddus Ali Sarkar accused political entities of interfering in the electoral roll revision and breaching SR regulations.

“In certain constituencies, objections have been lodged against 10,000 to 20,000 voters. According to SR guidelines, mass objections are prohibited. However, in Biswanath, we have observed instances where numerous objections were submitted from a single booth in one day, with many living individuals incorrectly declared deceased. Such objections should be dismissed,” Sarkar remarked.

He further noted that AAMSU has submitted memoranda to both the Election Commission of India and district authorities throughout Assam, urging immediate corrective measures and cautioning against what they describe as attempts to selectively target minority voters during the SR process.
