Concerns Raised Over Election Integrity in Assam Ahead of Results
Allegations of Misuse of Power in Assam Elections
Guwahati, Apr 13: As the countdown to the Assembly election results on May 4 continues, the Assam Citizens’ Convention has raised alarms regarding the ruling party's alleged misuse of authority, questioning the impartiality of police, electoral practices, and the security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
During a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club, former Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan expressed concerns about the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's conduct, stating that while the polling process was generally peaceful, the Chief Minister's actions and remarks had “exceeded all bounds.”
“Although the election proceeded without major incidents, the Chief Minister's behavior during this time has been unacceptable. Additionally, the Assam Police's actions seem inconsistent,” Bhuyan claimed.
He referenced comments made by Congress leader Pawan Khera and criticized the state government's reaction.
“Rather than providing evidence and seeking judicial intervention, the Chief Minister opted to deploy Assam Police against Pawan Khera,” he noted.
Bhuyan emphasized that such occurrences have ignited discussions within civil society and the media, asserting that allegations against prominent public figures should be handled with factual evidence and due process.
He insisted that the right course of action would be to conduct an unbiased investigation.
“Instead, it appears that the complainant is facing pressure and attempts to silence or dissuade them, particularly during this election period,” he remarked.
Bhuyan also pointed out a “double standard” in police responses, citing the case of AJP candidate Kunki Chowdhury from Guwahati Central.
“Despite lodging a complaint at Panbazar Police Station, no action was taken. Conversely, members of her media team were detained late at night, and she was called in for questioning. What is happening in Assam?” he questioned, also mentioning alleged comments made by the Chief Minister regarding Chowdhury’s family.
He further alleged that incidents of vandalism targeting opposition party offices during the election period were ignored by law enforcement.
“The Chief Minister is attempting to undermine the populace by inciting hatred, and when he faces opposition, he reacts with anger. If such individuals are re-elected, we cannot fathom the consequences,” Bhuyan warned.
Expressing concerns for the post-election phase, Bhuyan urged opposition parties to remain vigilant regarding the security of EVMs stored in strong rooms and to collectively voice their objections when necessary.
“While the elections have concluded, it is now crucial to safeguard the integrity of the mandate. Opposition parties must stay alert and united,” he concluded.
