Community Initiative in Aizawl Tackles Plastic Waste Through Recycling
Aizawl's Innovative Approach to Plastic Pollution
This initiative is part of a growing community-led effort to keep Aizawl clean, with several other localities in the State capital adopting similar arrangements
Aizawl, Nov 3: To combat plastic pollution through community engagement, a local sanitation committee in Aizawl has begun purchasing discarded plastic bottles and polythene bags from residents. This initiative not only promotes a cleaner environment but also transforms household waste into a source of income.
The Republic Veng Sanitation Committee, operating under the Republic Veng Local Council, launched a plastic waste collection campaign on October 31, offering residents Rs 30 per kilogram for plastic bottles and Rs 10 per kilogram for polythene bags. During this drive, the committee successfully collected 116 kilograms of plastic waste.
The gathered materials were sold to Khungngai Solution Pvt Ltd, a company recognized by the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, at a rate of Rs 10 per kilogram. Both the company and the sanitation committee are considering a formal partnership to enhance the collection and recycling of plastic waste.
This initiative is part of a broader community-driven movement aimed at maintaining cleanliness in Aizawl, with various neighborhoods in the state capital implementing similar systems where residents receive compensation for turning in plastic waste instead of discarding it carelessly.
These local programs are designed to tackle the issue of plastic litter by motivating households to sort and gather recyclable materials. By assigning a monetary value to discarded plastics, the committees encourage residents to take an active role in waste management, rather than relying solely on municipal services.
The Republic Veng Sanitation Committee was formed under the local council with the involvement of local NGOs, including the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizoram Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), and Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP).
The recent collection drive aimed not only to enhance cleanliness in the area but also to foster responsible waste disposal habits among residents. The collaboration with a licensed waste management company is anticipated to provide a viable outlet for the collected materials and bolster efforts to keep plastic waste out of the local environment, according to a community leader.
