Commercial LPG Prices Surge Post Elections, Sparking Public Outrage
Significant Price Hike in LPG Cylinders
Following the completion of assembly elections in five states, inflation has begun to rear its head. The central government has made a substantial increase in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders, hitting the public's budget hard. Effective immediately, the cost of a 19-kilogram commercial gas cylinder has surged by ₹993.
Akhilesh Yadav's Sharp Criticism
In response to this drastic price hike, Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, has taken a strong stance against the government. He expressed his views on the social media platform X, stating that when cylinder prices rise, it ultimately makes food more expensive for the poor. He sarcastically remarked, "Only those who buy and consume can understand this pain, not those who steal from others' plates."
Delhi Prices Exceed ₹3,000
With this latest increase, the price of commercial cylinders in the capital city of Delhi has now crossed ₹3,071.50. Experts believe that the rise in commercial gas prices will directly impact dining out and restaurant costs, ultimately straining the average consumer's finances.
Third Price Increase This Year
This marks the third consecutive price hike for commercial gas in 2026. Earlier increases occurred on March 7 and April 1, amounting to ₹144 and ₹200 respectively. However, the recent jump of ₹993 has raised concerns among hotel and restaurant owners.
Domestic Cylinder Prices Remain Stable
On a positive note for the general public, the prices of domestic cooking gas have been kept stable at ₹913 in Delhi. Prices in various cities remain consistent.
Reasons Behind the Price Surge
The steep increase in prices can be attributed to several global geopolitical factors:
- Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz: Tensions between Iran and Israel in the Middle East have disrupted supply in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Dependence on Imports: India imports nearly 60% of its LPG and 85-90% of crude oil from West Asian countries, leading to increased costs due to supply disruptions.
- Supply Cuts: There has been a reduction in gas supply for industrial sectors, directly affecting prices and availability.
- Efforts to Balance Supply: India is currently attempting to balance its supply by importing oil from Russia, but global market instability is clearly impacting prices.
