Tragic Loss of Senator Miguel Uribe

Miguel Uribe, a Colombian senator and presidential candidate, died early Monday morning, two months after suffering a gunshot wound to the head during a targeted attack in Bogotá. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing her sorrow and commitment to their children: 'I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you. Rest in peace, love of my life. I will take care of our children.'


Details of the Attack

The 39-year-old lawmaker, representing the right-wing opposition, was shot three times while addressing supporters in the Fontibon district on June 7, as he sought his party's nomination for the upcoming 2026 elections. Bogotá's Mayor, Carlos Galán, confirmed that Uribe was rushed for emergency medical treatment following the incident, which raised concerns about political violence in the country.

The Colombian government expressed its condolences via a post on social media, stating, 'The Presidency of the Republic deeply regrets the passing of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay. Who Was Miguel Uribe?

Miguel Uribe Turbay, aged 39, had been serving in the Senate since 2022. He was the son of journalist Diana Turbay and the grandson of former president Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala.


Arrests Made Following the Attack

A 15-year-old suspect was apprehended shortly after the shooting, although the motive remains unclear. In total, six individuals have been detained, including two men believed to have conspired in Medellín to carry out the assassination.

In the wake of Uribe's death, President Gustavo Petro emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, 'The investigation must be deepened. The competent authorities, with the help of international experts, will provide their findings in due course.' He expressed his sorrow, saying, 'Miguel’s death hurts us as if he were one of our own. According to the hospital where Uribe was treated, he experienced bleeding in his central nervous system and was scheduled for surgery.
