Gauff's Remarkable Journey to the Semifinals

On March 25, in Miami, Coco Gauff showcased her resilience by securing her first semifinal spot at the Miami Open, defeating Belinda Bencic in a challenging three-set match.

The American player bounced back from a dip in performance and a break deficit in the final set, ultimately winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 after a two-hour and 15-minute battle.

Gauff started the match strongly, taking control early with an aggressive style. She broke Bencic's serve early on and demonstrated excellent net play, winning all eight of her net points in the first set. With powerful serves and precise shots, she comfortably clinched the first set in just 51 minutes.

However, Bencic responded with vigor in the second set, minimizing her errors and finding her rhythm. Her improved consistency allowed her to quickly level the match, taking the second set in under 30 minutes.

The final set was marked by tension, with both players exchanging momentum. Gauff faced a critical moment while serving, managing to fend off a break point to stay competitive. Despite a brief moment of frustration over missed chances, she turned the tide.

Regaining her focus, Gauff broke back to equalize at 3-3 and began to take control again. With renewed confidence, she capitalized on key moments, delivering powerful serves and clever shot selections, including a crucial drop shot. She maintained her composure while serving for the match, completing her comeback.

This victory propels Gauff into the Miami semifinals for the first time in her career, where she will face Karolina Muchova. Gauff boasts a strong head-to-head record against Muchova, having won all five of their previous encounters, four of which were in straight sets.

In another quarterfinal match, Muchova continued her impressive performance, winning in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 7-6(5), saving a set point in the second set during the one-hour and 47-minute match.

This result improves Muchova's record for the 2026 season to 18-3 and marks her ninth semifinal appearance at the WTA 1000 level or higher, highlighting her consistency on the tour.
