New Delhi, Oct 11: Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) declared their intention to escalate protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar shortly after their release from detention, asserting that their demonstrations would extend across the nation.
Saurav Das, a prominent figure in the CJP, accused the Modi administration of fostering an 'emergency-like atmosphere' and alienating the state from its citizens.
He criticized the authorities for not engaging in dialogue with the protesters and instead opting to restrict their access to designated protest areas.
Das claimed that police detained the leaders without proper notification, confiscated their mobile devices, and obstructed their ability to contact legal counsel.
Commenting on the conditions tied to their release, he stated, 'They have mandated no disturbances for one year. The real disturbance has been instigated by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Gyanesh Kumar.'
'The protests are ongoing... Demonstrations will occur not only in Delhi but throughout the country,' he affirmed.
CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka remarked that recent events had evoked memories of the Emergency, alleging that train services were halted and protesters were harassed to prevent them from reaching Delhi.
'Even in 1975, trains were not suspended,' he noted, accusing Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah of transforming a protest against the Election Commission into a personal conflict.
Das also condemned the actions of Delhi Police, claiming they entered Gurudwara Bangla Sahib improperly and forcibly removed demonstrators. He called on the Sikh community to rally behind the protesters.
Aishe Ghosh, a leader from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), pledged to persist with the protests despite imposed restrictions. 'Jantar Mantar 2.0 is underway. We are on the streets and will remain there. We will uphold the Constitution,' she stated during a press briefing.
In a related incident, Delhi Police apprehended four individuals linked to a viral video that depicted assaults on students and women on DDU Marg on Saturday.
CJP's legal team leader Ratna Singh accused police of threatening the families of activists, urging them to dissuade their children from participating in the protests.
She also alleged that Intelligence Bureau agents had monitored her movements and questioned the rationale behind the restrictions on activists. 'I am a citizen. I have the right to go anywhere. How can you keep me in wrongful detention?' she questioned.
The CJP has been actively protesting against alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls and is demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. Its leaders have accused the government of employing preventive detentions and restrictions to stifle public participation in the protests.
