Civilians in Iran Form Human Chains Amid Rising Tensions with the US
Human Chains Formed Around Key Infrastructure
In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iranian civilians have begun to create human chains around critical infrastructure, including power plants and bridges. This movement follows a stark warning from US President Donald Trump, who stated that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not comply with a US ultimatum by Tuesday at 8 PM EST regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Footage shared online depicted large groups of people gathering at facilities such as the Kazerun Combined Cycle Power Plant in southern Iran. Similar gatherings were reported at bridges in Dehloran and Ahvaz, where families joined hands in solidarity. Iranian media outlets reported widespread participation across various regions.
Citizens also gathered at significant sites in Tabriz, Bisotun in Kermanshah Province, Mazandaran, and the Shahid Rajaei Thermal Power Plant in Qazvin Province, the largest in Iran. Demonstrators displayed national flags and held signs proclaiming, “Attacking power facilities is a war crime,” while forming human chains.
According to officials, this mobilization was partly coordinated by the Ministry of Sports and Youth, which encouraged “Iranian youth,” including athletes and artists, to gather around power plants nationwide. This initiative, termed the “Human Chain of Iran's Youth for a Bright Future,” was described as a grassroots effort originating from the youth themselves.
Alireza Rahimi, Deputy of Youth Affairs, noted that the concept was proposed by university students and young artists, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding national infrastructure. These actions followed previous strikes that reportedly damaged infrastructure, including a bridge in Karaj, southwest of Tehran.
Trump reiterated that if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by the deadline, the US would target all Iranian power plants and bridges. He expressed a desire to end what he termed “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death,” warning that the consequences could be dire.
Iran's military officials responded with strong rhetoric, indicating that any US attack on infrastructure would provoke severe retaliation, with threats to unleash significant military force against American forces. This exchange underscores the escalating crisis, with both sides appearing prepared for further confrontation.
