CIA's Deception Strategy Aids in Rescue of US Airman in Iran
Successful Rescue Operation in Iran
To hinder the Iranian search efforts, the CIA implemented a deception strategy, disseminating false information suggesting that US forces had already located the airman and were in the process of extracting him. This tactic aimed to mislead Iranian forces and divert their attention from the airman’s true location, according to an anonymous official. This strategy created confusion among Iranian search teams, allowing US intelligence to pinpoint the airman’s whereabouts and relay the coordinates to military leaders and the White House. An official described the operation as the ultimate 'needle in the haystack,' highlighting the challenges of locating the airman in such remote terrain while under pursuit.
In a statement on Truth Social, former President Trump referred to the operation as the "most daring" rescue mission undertaken by the US military, emphasizing the commitment to never abandon a service member. He expressed his relief that the airman, a highly respected Colonel, was now safe after being pursued in hostile territory. Trump stated, "We got him! My fellow Americans, over the past several hours, the United States Military executed one of the most audacious Search and Rescue Operations in US History for one of our incredible Crew Member Officers. This brave Warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies, but was never truly alone because his Commander in Chief, Secretary of War, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and fellow Warfighters were monitoring his location 24 hours a day, and diligently planning for his rescue."
The rescue operation involved aircraft flying at low altitudes over hostile terrain and troops trained for high-risk recovery missions. Additionally, an A-10 Thunderbolt II attack plane was struck by enemy fire from Iran on the same day. The pilot managed to navigate the aircraft to Kuwaiti airspace before ejecting and was also rescued. Furthermore, two helicopters involved in the search for the missing F-15 crew member came under ground fire from Iranian forces during the operation. Although some service members aboard were injured, all returned safely to base, as confirmed by US officials. This incident marks the first known occurrence of an American crewed aircraft being downed in hostile territory since the onset of the conflict.
