Chris Morris Endorses Ajinkya Rahane for SA20

Chris Morris, a former all-rounder from South Africa, has expressed that Ajinkya Rahane's extensive experience and composure could significantly benefit any T20 franchise abroad. He also praised Joe Root's role as the pre-signed wildcard player for the Paarl Royals ahead of the fifth season auction of SA20. Morris, who played alongside Rahane at Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2025, shared these insights during a discussion organized by SA20.

When questioned about the potential interest of SA20 teams in Rahane, Morris stated, "Absolutely. He brings a wealth of experience and is a remarkable individual. Having shared a dressing room with him, I can attest to his character. His calmness under pressure makes him a desirable asset for any team."

Morris referenced Dinesh Karthik's positive influence on the Paarl Royals during the third season of SA20, noting, "Karthik's character and willingness to share his insights greatly benefited the team. Rahane embodies similar qualities; he is a talented player and a great leader, having captained in the IPL and represented India for many years."

He further elaborated, "Bringing such experience into a team can guide younger players on how to approach the game. Rahane's batting style and ability to score T20 centuries effortlessly make him an excellent addition to any squad, not just for his skills but for his character as well."

Since announcing his retirement from international cricket and IPL in July, Rahane has signed on as a marquee player with the Amsterdam Flames for the inaugural European T20 Premier League. His retirement allows him to explore franchise opportunities outside India, and Morris believes Rahane's leadership and calm demeanor would be invaluable in a foreign team environment.

Morris Lauds Joe Root's Impact at Paarl Royals

Morris also highlighted the significance of Joe Root's return to the Paarl Royals for the upcoming SA20 season. Root, who is the leading run-scorer among active Test players with 14,114 runs in 166 matches, played for the Royals in the third season of SA20 in 2025. Although he missed the fourth season due to commitments with England, he is set to participate in the 2027 edition.

Discussing Root's influence on young South African players, Morris remarked, "His impact extends beyond his on-field performance. The pedigree he brings is immense. After Joe's participation, the team members expressed how his presence fostered a collaborative atmosphere, devoid of egos. He arrived with the humility of a great player, which positively affected everyone around him."

Morris added, "In a sport often filled with egos, having someone of Root's caliber who integrates seamlessly into the team dynamic is invaluable. His genuine nature encourages players to listen and learn from him. He is empathetic and takes the time to connect with others, making him a treasure in any squad."

Root's return is a significant highlight as the SA20 Season 5 auction approaches, continuing to draw renowned international players. The new season is anticipated to commence in January next year.
