Chris Lynn Faces One-Month Suspension for Cocaine Use in T20 Blast
Overview of the Suspension
Chris Lynn, the Australian T20 cricketer, has been handed a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine following the T20 Blast Finals Day held in England in July. The England Cricket Regulator has confirmed that the 36-year-old has successfully completed a rehabilitation program, as reported by various sports news outlets. Lynn underwent a standard anti-doping test on July 18, coinciding with Northamptonshire's victory in the T20 Blast, marking their third title win. During the Finals Day, he scored 39 runs in one match and only four in another.
Details of the Incident
After his urine sample was analyzed in a French laboratory, it was found to contain benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite. Following the T20 Blast, Lynn traveled to Sri Lanka to participate in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). However, he was sidelined from the tournament on July 29 due to a leg injury after playing just one match for Galle Gallants. He was notified of the adverse findings in his sample two days later and was provisionally suspended.
Admission and Regulatory Response
Three weeks post-suspension, Lynn admitted to using cocaine, clarifying that the incident occurred outside of any sporting event and did not affect his cricket performance. He stated that the substance was consumed over several hours on the evening of July 15 and into the early hours of July 16, 2026. Earlier that same evening, he had to retire hurt during a quarter-final match against Gloucestershire after being hit on the foot by a delivery from Duan Jansen.
Initially, the Cricket Regulator charged Lynn under two articles of the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) anti-doping regulations. However, one charge was dropped when it was determined that the cocaine concentration in his urine was below the threshold set by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines. Although a three-month suspension was initially considered, it was later reduced to one month after Lynn confirmed his completion of a substance abuse treatment program, which was finalized on August 30, one month after his provisional suspension began.
Future Prospects
Since serving his suspension, Lynn has not participated in any professional cricket matches. He has not yet confirmed a contract for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, although reports from Australian media indicate that he is set to join the Melbourne Renegades.
