New Delhi, Sept 13: On Sunday, Chinese President Xi Jinping departed from New Delhi after participating in the 18th BRICS Summit, which was hosted by India.

During his stay, Xi engaged in a bilateral discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders emphasized that 'differences should not escalate into disputes' and highlighted the importance of a strategic and long-term view of India-China relations.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 'The two leaders acknowledged the steady advancement in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. They reiterated the necessity for both nations to adopt a strategic and long-term perspective. Prime Minister Modi stressed that mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest should guide both sides.'

Modi pointed out that maintaining peace and stability in border regions is crucial for the ongoing development of their bilateral relationship.

'He emphasized the importance of adhering to existing agreements regarding border issues. Both leaders expressed their commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of boundary matters, considering the broader context of their bilateral relations and the long-term interests of their peoples,' the MEA statement added.

They also acknowledged the progress in cultural exchanges and emphasized the need to enhance business connections and mobility between the two nations.

Regarding economic and trade relations, they recognized the necessity to address each other's concerns, including trade imbalances and supply chain challenges, while ensuring meaningful and predictable market access, as stated by the MEA.

Furthermore, the leaders agreed on the importance of expanding common ground on regional and global issues and collaborating to tackle shared challenges.

Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for China's support during India's BRICS chairmanship and its contributions to the success of the BRICS Summit-2026.

During the summit, Xi participated in a tree plantation initiative alongside other BRICS leaders in New Delhi and visited the Bharat Innovates exposition at Bharat Mandapam.

Notably, Xi did not attend a gala dinner hosted by Modi for BRICS leaders and representatives from participating countries and international organizations, returning to his hotel to rest. The reason for his absence remains unclear.

This absence was significant as the dinner was a gathering for leaders from BRICS nations and other summit attendees. Another notable absence was Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, who left for home after attending the summit earlier that day.
