China's Diplomatic Concerns Regarding Nepal

China has intensified its diplomatic pressure on Nepal, demanding stricter restrictions on activities related to Tibet and Taiwan. These concerns were raised during a high-level meeting between Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming and Nepal's Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. According to reports, this development reflects China's growing unease regarding recent political signals from Kathmandu. As reported, during the meeting, Ambassador Zhang cautioned Nepal against participating in Tibetan political events, particularly the swearing-in ceremony of Penpa Tsering, the president of the 'Central Tibetan Administration,' scheduled for May 27 in Dharamshala.

The ambassador suggested that Nepal might be invited to this ceremony and urged officials to remain vigilant regarding this matter. China's apprehensions have escalated due to a series of recent events, including a congratulatory message sent by Tibetan leadership to Balendra Shah and the open display of Taiwanese symbols in Nepal's capital. Reports indicate that China perceives such gestures as a direct challenge to its territorial claims.

Concerns were also expressed regarding the status of Tibetan refugees in Nepal and the recent visits of representatives of the 14th Dalai Lama, which Chinese officials view as part of a broader pattern of 'anti-China' activities.

Experts note that even symbolic acts like public goodwill messages have elicited strong reactions from Beijing. In response to these concerns, Nepal reiterated its longstanding commitment to the 'One China' policy, as reported.

Home Minister Gurung emphasized that Nepal will maintain its sovereignty and decision-making freedom, ensuring that its territory is not used against neighboring countries. Officials also stressed that Nepal will not become a pawn for any external power. These updates are being reported by various media outlets. The Chinese envoy also hinted at the possible involvement of unnamed 'third countries' attempting to influence Nepal's internal affairs, describing it as a strategy aimed at encircling China. However, Kathmandu reaffirmed its commitment to a neutral foreign policy and balanced relations, as reported.
