Focus on Self-Employment Opportunities
Hailakandi, July 13: During his recent visit to the Barak Valley, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota arrived in Hailakandi on Saturday evening, urging officials to prioritize the creation of self-employment opportunities in the district.
At a review meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office that evening, Kota assessed the challenges and advancements in the execution of government initiatives in Hailakandi.
The Chief Secretary emphasized the need to accelerate the completion of ongoing projects and highlighted the importance of providing local job seekers with employment or self-employment options within the state, discouraging migration for work.
While in Hailakandi, Kota also inspected SK Roy Civil Hospital, evaluating its operations and the construction of new facilities on-site.
He visited the historic Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School and the Circuit House, instructing relevant departments to ensure timely completion of construction work.
In discussions regarding the Education Department, he directed improvements in the quality of midday meals in schools located in tea garden areas, recommending the addition of eggs to the menu.
Key updates shared with the Chief Secretary during the meeting included:
• The Public Works Department reported that the Model Women's College in Aenakhal, with a budget of 31 crore rupees, is set for completion this month.
• The PWD also noted that the ITI and Polytechnic in Katlicherra, costing Rs 62 crore, will be finished by October.
• The PHE department announced that a Rs 72.73 crore project to ensure drinking water supply for Hailakandi town for the next 30 years will commence soon.
• The Agriculture department revealed that out of 86,000 farmers in the district, 72,607 progressive farmers have received the nineteenth installment of the Prime Minister Kisan Yojana.
Visit to Sribhumi:
Earlier that day, Kota was in Sribhumi, where he noted the positive progress on the renovation of the Badarpur Gamon bridge, which is expected to be operational soon.
“I will coordinate with NHDCL authorities to expedite the renovation of this crucial bridge sustainably,” he stated.

Addressing concerns regarding potential food shortages in the Barak Valley due to landslides, the Chief Secretary assured, “The state government will ensure adequate food supplies are stocked as soon as goods trains resume operations.”
He also visited the construction site of the forthcoming Karimganj Medical College in Sribhumi district to review its progress.
