Chidambaram Raises Concerns Over INDIA Bloc's Future Amidst BJP's Strength

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has raised concerns about the future of the INDIA bloc, suggesting that its stability is in question. Speaking at the launch of a new book, he emphasized the formidable organizational strength of the BJP and the need for the opposition alliance to address internal issues. Chidambaram warned that the upcoming 2029 elections are critical for the future of democracy in India, urging the alliance to unite. The BJP responded by highlighting the Congress's struggles and labeling the INDIA bloc as a 'tukde-tukde alliance.'

Concerns About the INDIA Bloc

On Thursday, senior Congress figure P. Chidambaram expressed doubts regarding the future of the opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc. His remarks came during the launch of 'Contesting Democratic Deficit,' a book authored by Salman Khurshid and Mritunjay Singh Yadav.

Chidambaram conveyed uncertainty about the alliance's stability, stating, "The future of the INDIA bloc does not appear promising, as Mritunjay Singh Yadav suggests. He believes the alliance remains intact, but I have my reservations. Only Salman Khurshid, who was part of the negotiating team, can provide clarity. If the alliance is indeed whole, I would be pleased. However, it seems to be unraveling."

Possibility of Reconciliation

The Rajya Sabha MP mentioned that there is still an opportunity to unify the alliance, adding, "It can still be put together; there’s still time."

Chidambaram also pointed out the formidable organizational structure of the ruling party, emphasizing the need for the INDIA bloc to respond effectively. He remarked, "In my experience, no political party has been as well-organized as the BJP. It operates like a machine that controls various institutions across India."

Reflections on the Political Landscape

He elaborated on the BJP's influence, stating, "From the Election Commission to the lowest police station, they can control and sometimes capture these institutions. This machinery is as formidable as can be permitted in a democracy."

The book by Khurshid and Yadav discusses efforts to rejuvenate the Congress party ahead of the last Lok Sabha elections, including initiatives like the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the formation of the INDIA bloc, which aimed to unite various political factions to uphold the principles of an inclusive and pluralistic India.

Elections and Future Implications

Chidambaram also commented on the integrity of elections in India, stating, "While elections can be influenced, they cannot be entirely manipulated. You can interfere, but you cannot expect a ruling party to secure 98 percent of the votes without consequence."

He stressed the significance of the upcoming general elections, asserting, "The 2029 elections are crucial for restoring a full-fledged democracy. If the BJP strengthens its position in 2029, we may face irreparable consequences."

Responses from the BJP

Khurshid echoed Chidambaram's sentiments, noting the need for the INDIA bloc to resolve internal conflicts. He stated, "We must prepare for a significant battle in 2029 and find ways to unite our alliance partners."

In response, the BJP criticized Chidambaram's remarks, suggesting that the Congress party has been left wounded by repeated electoral defeats. BJP's Amit Malviya remarked, "Chidambaram used the term 'formidable' multiple times in a brief speech, indicating the Congress's struggles, akin to Pakistan after its military setbacks."

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla labeled the INDIA bloc a 'tukde-tukde alliance,' arguing that it was formed out of self-interest rather than genuine commitment, highlighting the contradictions within the alliance.
