Amit Jogi's Conviction in the Jaggi Murder Case

The Chhattisgarh High Court has imposed a life sentence on Amit Jogi, the son of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, in connection with a murder case dating back to 2003, as reported on Monday.

This case revolves around the assassination of Ramvatar Jaggi, the treasurer of the Nationalist Congress Party, who was fatally shot in Raipur on June 4, 2003, during Ajit Jogi's tenure as chief minister.

Amit Jogi was implicated in orchestrating the murder prior to a significant rally organized by the NCP, which was seen as a threat to the ruling Congress party.

On Thursday, the High Court found Amit Jogi guilty and ordered him to surrender within a three-week timeframe.

Following the conviction, Amit Jogi has approached the Supreme Court to contest the ruling, with the case scheduled for a hearing on April 20.

Previously, on May 31, 2007, a trial court had convicted 28 individuals for the murder, while Amit Jogi was acquitted.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenged this acquittal in 2011, but the High Court dismissed the application due to delays, also rejecting appeals from the Chhattisgarh government and Ramvatar Jaggi's son, Satish Jaggi.

At that time, the CBI had sought intervention from the Supreme Court regarding the acquittal.

In November, the Supreme Court directed the High Court to reevaluate the CBI's application, acknowledging the serious nature of the charges against Amit Jogi, which included conspiracy to murder a rival political figure.

In its recent ruling, the High Court criticized the trial court's earlier decision to acquit Amit Jogi, labeling it as "palpably illegal, wrong, perverse, contrary to the evidence available on record and without any concrete basis," according to reports.

The High Court remarked that the trial judge had improperly attempted to differentiate Amit Jogi's role from that of the other co-defendants, stating that the conclusion that the co-accused acted independently of Amit Jogi was unsustainable.
