Release from Raipur Central Jail

Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel, was released from Raipur Central Jail on Saturday, January 3. The Chhattisgarh High Court granted him bail in connection with two cases linked to an alleged liquor scam. His release came just a day after a ruling from the Bilaspur High Court, marking an emotional moment as it coincided with his son's birthday. Chaitanya was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 18, 2025, which was also his birthday.

Court's Reasoning

The High Court approved Chaitanya's bail in cases filed by the ED and the Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB)/Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The court noted that other accused individuals, previously granted bail by the Supreme Court, had a "significantly lower" level of involvement compared to Chaitanya. The court criticized the ED for relying on statements rather than solid evidence, stating that no documents, communications, financial instruments, bank accounts, or properties directly linked him to the proceeds of crime. The allegations were deemed based more on testimony than on concrete actions.

Support from Congress Workers

Bhupesh Baghel was surrounded by a large gathering of Congress workers from various districts outside the jail as he met his son. Chaitanya touched his father's feet, embraced him warmly, and then left in an SUV. He greeted the enthusiastic crowd by waving the Congress flag from the vehicle's roof. This scene created a festive atmosphere among the party's loyal supporters who had gathered in Raipur to show solidarity.
