Cheteshwar Pujara Encourages Shubman Gill Ahead of IPL 2026
Pujara Discusses Gill's Motivation for IPL 2026
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed that Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, could channel his exclusion from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad into a driving force for success in the upcoming tournament.
Pujara's Insights on Gill's Return to T20
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Pujara praised Gill as a "talented player capable of excelling in all formats". He believes that a standout performance in IPL 2026 could secure Gill's spot back in the T20I team. Pujara stated, "The disappointment of missing out on the T20 World Cup will certainly motivate Shubman Gill. He is a versatile player, and if he shines in this IPL season, he will definitely be considered for the T20I squad. He is already leading in Tests and captaining in ODIs, showcasing his multi-format capabilities."
Pressure and Opportunity for Gill
Pujara acknowledged the pressure Gill might feel due to his absence from the T20 World Cup squad but emphasized that the IPL offers a prime opportunity for him to showcase his skills across formats. He advised Gill to "increase his scoring rate" in T20s, aiming for a strike rate between 150 and 160. Pujara remarked, "While there will be some pressure, this IPL season is a perfect chance for him to continue his strong batting. He needs to focus on accelerating his game, which he has been working on."
Strengths of the Gujarat Titans
When discussing the Gujarat Titans' chances for the title, Pujara highlighted their formidable top order, which includes Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler, as a key strength. He noted, "GT appears to be a strong contender this season. Their top order is exceptional, and these players have consistently scored runs, which is crucial for the team's success."
Key Players and Finishers
Pujara also pointed out Rahul Tewatia as a vital finisher and mentioned Shahrukh Khan as a player who could significantly impact the team's performance. He stated, "The depth of all-rounders, especially with Jason Holder's addition, enhances their strength. Holder is in excellent form and will contribute in both batting and bowling. Tewatia is expected to be the main finisher, while Shahrukh Khan's performance could elevate GT's game to another level."
Bowling Strengths of GT
On the bowling side, Pujara emphasized that the Titans' seamers are their primary asset, featuring Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, with additional support from Ishant Sharma, Ashok Sharma, and Luke Wood. He added, "Their bowling strength lies in their pace attack. Rabada, Siraj, and Krishna are the main bowlers, with Ishant Sharma available if needed. Ashok Sharma will also bring his pace into play during the season. Luke Wood is another capable seamer who can step in if required. Fans will be hoping for a strong performance from Rabada this IPL season."
