Tensions Rise Before IPL 2026

As the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches in two weeks, a surprising off-field conflict has emerged between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) regarding copyright issues at the Madras High Court.

Background of the Dispute

Both CSK and SRH are southern franchises based in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The conflict arose when Sun TV Network, which owns the SRH franchise, initiated legal action against CSK for allegedly using songs from Tamil cinema icon Rajinikanth without authorization in their promotional materials.

Details of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit filed by Sun TV Network in the Madras High Court claims that CSK used Rajinikanth's songs in their social media promotions without proper licensing.

Rajinikanth is a beloved figure in Tamil cinema, and his film songs are frequently utilized for promotional content. CSK's social media team has previously featured popular tracks from Rajinikanth's films, including 'Jailer' and 'Coolie', to engage their fanbase.

The legal issue arose because CSK did not secure the necessary permissions from the rights holders, leading Sun TV Network to protect Rajinikanth's intellectual property.

Court Proceedings

Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy is overseeing the case, which involves arguments about copyright infringement and the importance of obtaining proper licenses.

CSK's legal counsel informed the court that they had removed all infringing content from their social media platforms after receiving a warning from Sun TV Network on March 1.

Sun TV Network is seeking INR 1 Crore in damages and a detailed account of any revenue generated from the promotional clips featuring songs like 'Hukum' from 'Jailer'.

The court has directed CSK to submit an affidavit confirming they will refrain from using any copyrighted Rajinikanth songs in future promotions without proper authorization and has adjourned the case until March 16.

Social Media Reactions

The legal dispute has ignited a lively discussion on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), where fans and cricket followers have shared diverse opinions.

Some criticized CSK for their unauthorized use of Rajinikanth's songs, while others joked about political influences in the matter and suggested that CSK should create original content.

Supporters of CSK argued that the copyright issue was exaggerated, while others pointed out the complexities surrounding intellectual property rights in both entertainment and sports.

Upcoming IPL Matches

Despite the ongoing legal battle, CSK is set to begin their quest for a record sixth IPL title against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30, while SRH will face the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in the season opener on March 28.
