Chemical Leak in Maharashtra Averted Major Industrial Disaster
Chemical Leak Incident in Palghar District
On Monday afternoon, a significant industrial accident was narrowly avoided in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. A leak of oleum gas (fuming sulfuric acid) from a chemical unit located in the Boisar MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area caused widespread panic. Thanks to the prompt actions of the authorities, 1,600 schoolchildren and 1,000 workers were safely evacuated to secure locations.
The incident occurred around 2 PM when a leak began from a 2,500-liter capacity oleum day tank at Bhageria Industries Limited. Officials reported that three individuals experienced minor eye irritation due to the gas leak, which affected an area within a five-kilometer radius of the facility. A dense cloud of white smoke quickly spread due to wind, alarming residents and workers in the industrial zone. The exact cause of the gas leak remains under investigation.
Dr. Indu Rani Jakhad, the collector of Palghar district, who was personally monitoring the situation, stated that the disaster management plan was activated immediately. According to a press release from the administration, the leak originated from a 2,500-liter oleum day tank, and the smoke spread due to wind direction, impacting areas up to five kilometers away. As a precaution, officials ordered the immediate evacuation of 1,600 students from the local school, Tarapur Vidyamandir, along with over 1,000 workers from Bhageria Industries and nearby companies.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and firefighting units initially faced challenges reaching the site of the gas leak. The official statement indicated that the high concentration of smoke in the affected areas complicated the rescue teams' access to the leak's exact location. Chemical experts and NDRF personnel eventually identified the source and entered the premises using self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). To control the smoke, rescue teams placed sandbags around the leaking tank.
According to officials, at least three individuals reported minor eye irritation and are receiving medical treatment at local hospitals. The district police superintendent, Yatish Deshmukh, reassured villagers not to panic, as officials were taking all necessary measures to manage the situation. Jakhad urged residents to stay indoors and follow the instructions provided by the administration, emphasizing that the situation is being monitored continuously in coordination with all relevant departments. She also advised citizens not to believe in rumors.
