Chelsea's Premier League Title Aspirations Questioned Amid Transfer Needs

Alan Shearer has expressed skepticism about Chelsea's chances of winning the Premier League, highlighting the need for significant reinforcements in key positions. On a recent podcast, he emphasized that the team requires a top-class centre-forward, a commanding centre-back, and a reliable goalkeeper to compete effectively. Despite a hefty investment of nearly £2 billion since 2022, Chelsea's performance has been inconsistent, raising concerns about their squad depth. Gary Lineker echoed these sentiments, noting a shift in fan sentiment following recent matches. As Chelsea navigates these challenges, the upcoming January transfer window may prove crucial for their title aspirations.

Concerns Over Chelsea's Title Challenge

Alan Shearer has raised doubts about Chelsea's capability to compete for the Premier League title, emphasizing the necessity for Enzo Maresca's team to bolster three key positions in the upcoming January transfer window.

During a discussion on The Rest Is Football podcast, the all-time leading scorer in the Premier League pointed out that Chelsea needs to acquire a top-tier centre-forward, a strong centre-back, and a dependable goalkeeper to elevate their performance. He stated, "They are missing a top-class No.9 and a solid centre-half. Perhaps a goalkeeper as well... I've never been fully convinced that Chelsea can clinch the league title."

Investment vs. Performance

Since the change in ownership in 2022, Chelsea has invested nearly £2 billion, yet the results have not reflected this financial commitment. Following a promising start to the 2025-26 season, the team has struggled, managing only two victories in their last eight matches across all competitions. Shearer noted that while players like Joao Pedro and Liam Delap show promise, the team still lacks the proven talent necessary for consistent top-level competition.

Recent Match Performance

Chelsea's recent league performances highlight these concerns. They drew 2-2 against Newcastle United at St. James' Park and subsequently lost 2-1 to Aston Villa. This inconsistency has sparked questions regarding the depth and balance of their squad.

Fan Sentiment and Tactical Issues

Gary Lineker, also a guest on the podcast, supported Shearer's assessment. He noted Chelsea's inconsistent performances, mentioning that their impressive 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on November 25 temporarily obscured deeper issues. This win concluded a six-match unbeaten streak, but Lineker observed a shift in fan sentiment since then. "It's interesting in football – just weeks ago, we were discussing Chelsea's brilliant tactical display against Barcelona. Now, it seems fans are starting to express their concerns, especially on social media," he remarked.

Struggles in Forward Positions

Lineker also pointed out the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea's centre-forward situation. Liam Delap, who joined from Ipswich Town in the summer, has faced injury challenges and has scored only once in 12 appearances. Meanwhile, Joao Pedro, acquired from Brighton & Hove Albion, has netted seven goals and provided four assists in 23 matches but has not established himself as a reliable No.9. "They are facing difficulties. They still haven't determined who should play centre-forward. Liam Delap has been sidelined for much of the season and hasn't had a consistent run. I don't believe Joao Pedro fits the No.9 role," Lineker commented.
