Chelsea's defensive issues and struggles with set-pieces persisted under the management of Xabi Alonso, as they suffered a 0-3 defeat to West London rivals Brentford in their Premier League encounter on Friday.

With this victory, Brentford climbed to third place in the Premier League standings, accumulating nine points from five matches, while Chelsea fell to seventh, recording two wins, one draw, and two losses.

After a promising start with two victories, Chelsea's momentum has been hindered by a loss, a draw, and now another defeat. The first half ended without any goals. Chelsea notably missed their star player Joao Pedro, and veteran Danny Welbeck struggled to make an impact. Additionally, Moises Caicedo's absence was felt, with his substitute, Jordan Henderson, failing to impress. Chelsea squandered several opportunities in the first half, particularly when Morgan Rogers had a shot blocked by Jannik Schuster in the 41st minute.

Second Half Breakdown

The second half saw Jaidon Anthony score the opening goal in the 61st minute. A corner taken by Mikkel Damsgaard was headed across by Jannik, leaving Anthony unmarked and perfectly positioned to score.

In the 83rd minute, Kevin Schade's one-on-one effort was saved by Chelsea, but Igor Thiago capitalized on the rebound to extend the lead. Fabio Carvalho sealed the match with a third goal for Brentford during stoppage time, securing three crucial points.

Chelsea has now conceded a total of 12 goals in the Premier League this season, the highest in the league, and their search for a clean sheet continues.

Xabi Alonso's Reaction to the Loss

Following the match, Xabi Alonso expressed his disappointment regarding the second half and the overall result. He stated, "I am disappointed with the second half and with the result. This is not enough to compete in the Premier League. We were not able to maintain our level for the full 90 minutes, and that is why we were punished today. It is about everything. It is about the mentality, the football, and the tactical aspects that we need to keep improving. We can do much better."

When asked if Joao Pedro's absence played a role in the defeat, Xabi declined to use it as an excuse, saying, "It is not about looking for excuses. We need to look at each other and know that we have to work and improve because there is still a long way to go. We have to check many things. We got into situations, but we were not precise enough with the final action. That is why we did not score."
