Dibrugarh, Nov 3: The Kuki-Zo community in Dibrugarh and nearby areas celebrated ‘Chavang Kut 2026’ with immense enthusiasm and traditional spirit at the Tai Educational and Cultural Centre, Boiragimoth.

The event, themed ‘Let Us Take Pride in Our Past, Celebrate Who We Are Today and Work Together to Build a Brighter Tomorrow’, saw community members donning vibrant traditional outfits, engaging in cultural performances, and sharing cherished memories.

While the Kuki-Zo population is primarily found in districts like Dima Hasao, Cachar, and Karbi Anglong, many families have also settled in various regions of Upper Assam.

This annual celebration serves as a vital gathering for the dispersed community, allowing individuals who might otherwise be preoccupied with their daily lives to come together. Beyond the lively dances and music, the event embodies a spirit of unity and belonging.

Chavang Kut, celebrated on November 1, is a significant festival for the Kuki-Chin-Mizo communities in Northeast India. It is deeply rooted in agricultural traditions, marking the end of the harvest season, especially linked to jhum cultivation in the hills.

The festival is a time to express gratitude to the Almighty for a fruitful harvest and the blessings received throughout the year.

Dr. Lamkholal Doungel, Associate Professor at DHSK College, Dibrugarh, and chief organizer of the event, elaborated on the festival's historical and cultural importance, noting that Chavang Kut traditionally offers a chance for people to unwind and celebrate after months of hard work in the fields.

The Dibrugarh celebration, first held in 2006, has evolved into a crucial platform for the Kuki-Zo community to uphold its cultural heritage and foster intergenerational relationships.

The program, led by Pu P Thangsuanhau Phiamphu, began with the formal inauguration of Chavang Kut 2026 by Kut-Pa Pu Lianbel Vaiphei. The chief guest, Pi N Boisi Misao, Regional Director (i/c) of the Directorate of Training and National Vocational Education and Training, emphasized the importance of unity and collective strength, stating: “We are second to none in all spheres of life; we only need to be united.”
