Dramatic Protests in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was the scene of intense drama on Wednesday as women MPs from the opposition marched towards the Treasury benches, brandishing banners just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to respond to the Motion of Thanks regarding the President's address.

At the time, the Prime Minister was absent, and BJP member P P Chaudhary was delivering his speech when opposition members surged into the Well of the House, protesting against the trade agreement with the United States and the unpublished book by former Army Chief M M Naravane.

The House has been rife with protests from opposition members, particularly over Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's push to discuss Naravane's 'unpublished' book, which faced strong opposition from senior ministers like Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah.

When the session resumed at 2 PM, BJP member Nishikant Dubey ignited further controversy by referencing books such as "Edwina and Nehru" and the "Mitrokhin Archive," making remarks aimed at former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi.

As Dubey continued to cite various books and their contents regarding the Gandhi family, TDP member Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding, intervened, stating that he could not permit such comments as the Speaker had previously ruled against them.

Tenneti invoked Rule 349, which prohibits members from reading from any book, newspaper, or letter unless it pertains to the House's business.

Dubey's comments incited anger among Congress and other opposition members, prompting them to confront him, which led to the House being adjourned until 5:00 PM.

Following the adjournment, Congress MPs approached Speaker Om Birla to express their discontent over the Chair's decision to allow Dubey to quote from books, arguing that the Leader of the Opposition had been denied a similar opportunity.

The Lok Sabha had already experienced three adjournments on Wednesday—at 11 AM, 12 noon, and 2 PM—over the discussions surrounding the former Army chief's book and the India-US trade deal. Government floor managers indicated that the Prime Minister would address the Motion of Thanks at 5:00 PM.

Opposition members were calling for Dubey's suspension from the House due to his remarks.

When the Lok Sabha reconvened at 5:00 PM, women MPs from the opposition, led by Congress member Varsha Gaikwad, protested against Dubey and marched towards the Prime Minister's chair.

BJP member Sandhya Rai, who was presiding, subsequently adjourned the proceedings for the day.
