In response to growing criticism and confusion regarding the management of the Manimahesh Yatra, a video message from Chamba's Deputy Commissioner, Mukesh Rakshpal, was released online on Friday. This marks the first official communication from the district administration since the annual pilgrimage commenced.

Officials reported that the DC has been stationed in Bharmour since Thursday to supervise rescue operations, and the video appears to have been pre-recorded.

The message aimed to clarify issues related to registration, the number of stranded pilgrims, and the ongoing relief efforts.

Authorities are currently facing fluctuating estimates of the number of devotees stranded in the area, with numbers varying between 8,000 and 10,000. Rakshpal mentioned in the video, “It is believed that there are people at Hadsar, Kugti, Bharmour, Lahal, and Khadamukh. Everything is packed in these places.”

District records indicate that there have been 11 fatalities during the Yatra thus far. However, recovery operations are still ongoing, with three bodies yet to be retrieved due to difficult terrain. “Efforts are on,” the DC stated.

Rakshpal also refuted rumors circulating on social media regarding cloudbursts and significant casualties, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information.

In related news, Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena informed reporters that nearly 3,000 pilgrims stranded in Bharmour are being evacuated. He noted that around 10,000 individuals remain trapped in Chamba due to landslides affecting the Chamba–Bharmour route between Bagga and Durgathi.

The state government has indicated that they are ready to airlift essential supplies if road conditions deteriorate further. Pilgrims have been advised to return home once safe passage is restored.

Despite ongoing road blockages and weather-related uncertainties, the DC’s video serves as the first official update from the district administration since the crisis began, providing much-needed clarity on a rapidly changing situation.
