Challenges Faced by Hot Air Balloon Ride at Yamuna's Bansara Park

The hot air balloon ride at Bansara Park has not attracted the expected crowds since its launch, primarily due to Delhi's severe pollution and smog. Despite reducing ticket prices from ₹3,000 to ₹2,300, sales remain low, with only about 20 tickets sold on weekends. Critics argue that the ride distracts from the city's environmental challenges, and experts have labeled it as 'greenwashing.' Plans for expansion have been paused until demand improves. The ride, operated by a private company, offers a brief aerial experience, and organizers hope for better visibility in the coming months to draw more visitors.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Struggles to Attract Visitors

The hot air balloon ride launched with great enthusiasm at Bansara Park along the Yamuna River is failing to draw the expected crowds. Introduced on November 29 as part of a major 'eco-adventure' initiative, the experience has been marred by Delhi's toxic air and smog, dampening the enjoyment for tourists.

Ticket Prices Reduced, Yet Sales Remain Low

Initially priced at ₹3,000 per person, the ticket cost has been slashed to ₹2,300 due to a lack of interest. Reports indicate that only about 20 tickets are sold on average during weekends. In response, organizers are planning to implement an online booking system to attract more participants.

Pollution: A Major Factor for Low Participation

During winter, Delhi's air quality index has consistently fallen into the 'very poor' category. The pervasive smog has hindered people's ability to enjoy the aerial views of the city. Since the project's inception, it has faced criticism, with many arguing that ascending into a foggy sky makes little sense when the city is grappling with pollution.

Experts Label It as 'Greenwashing'

Experts have criticized the initiative as a form of 'greenwashing,' suggesting it distracts from the city's pressing environmental issues. Additionally, the influx of tourists in the sensitive floodplains of the Yamuna could potentially harm the local ecosystem.

Expansion Plans on Hold

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had intended to extend this ride to locations such as Asita Park, Yamuna Sports Complex, and the Commonwealth Games Village. However, these plans have been put on hold until there is an improvement in demand.

Ride Features

Operated by a private entity, the ride involves tethering the balloon to the ground and ascending to heights of 100-150 feet. Each flight lasts between 7 to 12 minutes and can accommodate four passengers at a time. Organizers are hopeful that clearer skies by February will enhance visibility and encourage more people to partake in this adventure.
