Chakma Communities Advocate for New Highway to Boost Connectivity in Northeast India

A delegation from the Chakma communities has called on the Central Government to approve a two-lane National Highway connecting Mizoram and Tripura. Led by Tripura minister Santana Chakma, the group believes this highway could transform regional connectivity, enhance border trade, and stimulate economic growth in the northeastern region. The proposed route traverses remote areas of Mizoram and is part of a larger project aimed at improving links between India and Myanmar. The initiative is expected to promote socio-economic development and strengthen national security in the region.

Call for Enhanced Regional Connectivity

Agartala, Oct 31: A coalition representing the Chakma communities has appealed to the Central Government for the approval of a two-lane National Highway that would connect Mizoram and Tripura. They argue that this infrastructure project could significantly enhance regional connectivity, bolster border trade, and stimulate economic development in the northeastern states.

The delegation, spearheaded by Tripura minister Santana Chakma, presented their request to Union minister Dr. Jitendra Singh during his visit to Silsury in Mizoram's Mamit district on October 30. This appeal coincided with Dr. Singh's campaign for the upcoming Dampa Assembly by-election, set for November 11.

Durjya Dhan Chakma, president of the BJP’s Chakma district unit, highlighted that the proposed highway would connect Khantlang in Tripura to Zochachhuah in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, linking with National Highway 502A. This highway is a vital part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which aims to improve connectivity between India and Myanmar.

The suggested route – Khantlang-Rajivnagar-Silsury-Marpara-Haulongsora-Samuksury-Matrisora-Demagiri-Borapansury-Kamalanagar-Longpuighat-Parva-Zochachhuah – passes through some of the most isolated and underdeveloped areas of Mizoram.

Durjya Dhan Chakma emphasized, “This initiative will significantly enhance road access, foster socio-economic growth, strengthen national security, and promote cross-border trade in the Chakma, Lai, and Mizo regions of Mamit, Lunglei, and Lawngtlai districts.”
