Upgrade of RIMS to AIIMS Status

Imphal, Sept 2: The Central Government has shown willingness to elevate the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), as stated by Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.

After returning from a trip to New Delhi, Singh revealed that during a meeting with Union Health Minister J P Nadda on August 31, the proposal was positively received.

In a social media update, the Chief Minister elaborated on their discussions aimed at enhancing the healthcare framework in Manipur.

"We talked about various aspects of improving the health sector in our state. The Union Minister has consented to the upgrade of RIMS to AIIMS status. I am deeply thankful to the Union Health Minister for his commitment to advancing healthcare in our region," Singh noted.

Additionally, he mentioned that Nadda has also agreed to support the establishment of a new medical college in Senapati district.

"Nadda has confirmed his approval for the new Medical College in Senapati District," the Chief Minister added.

This announcement follows a recent meeting on August 26, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah agreed to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Senapati Medical College during his upcoming visit to Manipur in early October.

RIMS, located in Imphal, is a leading medical institution in Northeast India and operates as an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The institute provides a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty courses across various medical fields.

Having been established over fifty years ago, RIMS has successfully trained 3,500 doctors, 1,850 specialists, 200 BSc nursing graduates, and 150 dental surgeons.
