Central Employees Demand Salary Increase in 8th Pay Commission

Central government employees are advocating for a significant salary increase as part of the 8th Pay Commission, with proposals suggesting a rise in the minimum basic salary to between ₹69,000 and ₹72,000. Employee organizations are also pushing for a 6% annual increment and improvements in pension schemes. The final decision from the government is awaited, which will determine the future of these proposals and their implementation timeline.

Significant Developments in the 8th Pay Commission

New Delhi: A major update has emerged regarding the 8th Pay Commission for central government employees. Millions of employees are eagerly awaiting an increase in their salaries and pensions. In the meantime, employee organizations have proposed raising the minimum basic salary from ₹65,000 to ₹72,000. If these proposals are approved, it could lead to a significant change in the salaries of central employees. However, these demands are still under consideration, and no final decision has been made by the government yet.

What is the Proposed Basic Salary in the 8th Pay Commission?

Various employee organizations have submitted different proposals to the 8th Pay Commission. The most discussed proposals suggest a basic salary of ₹69,000 and ₹72,000.

According to a report from Mint dated September 27, 2026:

  • NC-JCM: Demands a minimum basic salary of ₹69,000.

  • BPMS: Proposes raising the minimum basic salary to ₹72,000.

  • Fitment Factor: NC-JCM has proposed a fitment factor of 3.833, while BPMS has suggested 4.0.

What Happens if the Fitment Factor is 4?

The fitment factor is a multiplier used to convert the old basic salary into the new pay structure. For example, if the current minimum basic salary is ₹18,000 and the fitment factor is 4.0, the calculation would be:

₹18,000 × 4.0 = ₹72,000

However, this is just a theoretical example. The actual salary will depend on the recommendations of the pay commission and the government's approval.

Employees Demand 6% Annual Increment

In addition to the basic salary, employee organizations have also proposed an increase in the annual salary increment. NC-JCM has requested to raise the current 3% annual increment to 6%.

Furthermore, employees have raised issues regarding changes in the pay matrix, improvements in pensions, and setting minimum wages based on family needs.

When Will the 8th Pay Commission Be Implemented?

The central government established the 8th Pay Commission on November 3, 2025. The commission is expected to submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its formation.

The commission is chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The government will make a final decision regarding the implementation of the recommendations after considering them.

Will Employees Benefit from the ₹72,000 Basic Salary?

Currently, there is no confirmation that central employees will receive a minimum basic salary of ₹72,000. This demand has been put forth by BPMS, while NC-JCM has proposed ₹69,000.

Therefore, employees will have to wait for the final government announcement. The recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission and the approval from the central government will determine how much the minimum basic salary will increase.

Conclusion: The proposals for a basic salary ranging from ₹69,000 to ₹72,000 in the 8th Pay Commission have raised the hopes of central employees. However, these are still demands from employee organizations and have not yet been approved as official salaries.
