Census 2027 Self-Enumeration Phase Underway

New Delhi: As of now, approximately 8.2 million households have utilized the self-enumeration option during the initial phase of the Houselisting and Housing Operations (HLO) for Census 2027, according to a government announcement made on Friday.

Field operations for the HLO exercise commenced on Friday in states including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, following the completion of a 15-day self-enumeration period.

This phase will extend until May 30, 2026, during which trained enumerators will conduct house-to-house visits to gather data.

Enumerators will ask citizens 33 questions regarding home facilities and details about the household head and members, including their names, gender, and ownership status.

The self-enumeration option has also started in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) area, as well as in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, and Jharkhand, as per the statement.

The online self-enumeration facility in these regions will be accessible until May 15, followed by a month of field operations starting May 16.

In Bihar, the self-enumeration period ended on Friday, with house-to-house operations set to begin on May 2.

The introduction of the self-enumeration facility for Census 2027 has been met with a positive response from the public. So far, around 8.2 million households have successfully used the official portal for this purpose.

Citizens participating in self-enumeration will create a unique ID after providing the necessary information online, which they will present to enumerators during their visits for verification.

This census will be fully digital, with enumerators equipped with a specialized mobile application designed for data collection during field operations.

The houselisting phase will also set the stage for the population enumeration phase of Census 2027, scheduled for next year.

Currently, the self-enumeration facility is active in Telangana and Punjab as per the established timeline.

Field operations for the Houselisting and Housing Census are also ongoing in regions such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand, including the NDMC area and Delhi Cantonment Board in the National Capital Territory.
