Censorship of 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' Sparks Controversy Over India-Israel Relations

The Central Board of Film Certification has blocked the release of 'The Voice of Hind Rajab', a film depicting the tragic story of a Palestinian girl. Concerns over its potential impact on India-Israel relations have sparked controversy. Distributor Manoj Nandwana argues that the film's release poses no threat to diplomatic ties, while the director questions the fragility of the relationship. This incident follows previous censorship cases in India, raising broader questions about artistic freedom and political sensitivities.

Film Blocked by Certification Board

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has prohibited the theatrical release of The Voice of Hind Rajab in India, citing concerns that the film could jeopardize diplomatic relations between India and Israel, as reported by the film's local distributor.

Plot and Background of the Film

This Oscar-nominated film, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, tells the poignant story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab, who was killed during an Israeli attack in Gaza.

The tragic event occurred in 2024 amidst extensive air and ground assaults by Israel on the Palestinian territory, which began in October 2023 and resulted in over 70,000 fatalities.

Distributor's Concerns

Manoj Nandwana, the distributor from Jai Viratra Entertainment in Mumbai, expressed that the film's censorship is due to its sensitive nature. He revealed that a CBFC member indicated that releasing the film could harm the India-Israel relationship.

Nandwana had initially planned to release the film on March 6, believing it would be a strategic date ahead of the Oscars.

Political Context

This decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel in late February, where he reaffirmed India's strong support for Israel during a speech in the Knesset, expressing condolences for the casualties from the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

Modi emphasized India's unwavering stance against terrorism and highlighted the historical ties between the two nations.

Censorship Debate

Nandwana argued that the strength of the India-Israel relationship makes it unreasonable to believe that a film could disrupt it. He noted that The Voice of Hind Rajab has been screened in various countries with ties to Israel, yet it faces censorship in India.

Additionally, an unnamed government official mentioned that the film has been sent to a revising committee within the CBFC for further evaluation.

Director's Reaction

In a social media post, director Kaouther Ben Hania questioned whether the relationship between the two democracies is so fragile that a film could threaten it.

This incident follows a similar situation in 2025 when the CBFC halted the release of Santosh, an Oscar-shortlisted film that addressed caste and religious politics in India.
