Guwahati, Sept 19: On Saturday, the voices of approximately six lakh students filled the air in Assam as they united to perform Zubeen Garg’s renowned song Diya Ghurai Diya in honor of 'Zubeen Divas'.

This event was collaboratively organized by the Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya Shiksha Sansad and the Zubeen Garg Foundation, engaging students, educators, parents, and guests to celebrate the artist's significant impact on Assamese culture and language.

At the Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya in Guwahati, around 2,600 students, along with faculty and staff, took part in the celebration.

Ghanashyam Medhi, the principal of Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya, noted that the event was held on a grand scale throughout the state.

“We are thrilled that the Zubeen Garg Foundation collaborated with us to honor Zubeen Garg. Over six lakh students and about 50,000 teachers from Assam Jatiya Vidyalayas participated in this initiative,” Medhi stated.

He also mentioned that the second phase of the initiative, titled Sradhargya Jatra, aims to spread Garg’s music across various locations in Guwahati.

“Two vehicles will traverse different areas of Guwahati, playing Zubeen Garg’s songs, allowing people to visit and pay their respects,” Medhi explained.

The day commenced at 8:45 AM with students collectively singing Diya Ghurai Diya, creating a heartfelt ambiance as Garg’s melodies echoed throughout the school grounds.

Garima Saikia Garg and other foundation members attended the event.

Reflecting on the widespread participation, Garima expressed her appreciation for the affection shown towards Garg.

“I am truly honored and thankful for the love and respect given to Zubeen. Students of all ages came together to sing for him. I believe such a large-scale event has never occurred in Assam before. Students from various districts united to honor Zubeen,” she remarked.

Garima emphasized that the turnout highlighted the extensive reach of Garg’s influence on Assamese culture.

“Everyone has the ability to promote Assamese art and culture globally. These students exemplify the strength of our mother tongue, just as Zubeen did throughout his life by uplifting and popularizing the Assamese language,” she added.

The event also aimed to connect students with Garg’s artistic legacy and his contributions to Assamese music and culture.
