Celebrating the Legacy of K.R. Panchhi: A Musical Tribute on His 90th Birthday
A Grand Celebration for K.R. Panchhi
The 90th birthday of the esteemed Pahari lyricist, composer, and folk literature authority K.R. Panchhi was joyfully commemorated at Khatri Sabha Bhawan in Mandi. This musical gathering, organized by Sangeet Sadan, attracted artists, writers, and fans from various parts of the region.
Retired Session Judge Tejendra Nath Vaidya graced the event as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Naresh Vaidya, the President of Khatri Sabha, served as the Guest of Honour. Speakers from Mandi, Sundernagar, and Kullu paid tribute to Panchhi’s significant contributions to local literature and music, expressing profound admiration for his lifelong commitment.
The celebration included a ceremonial cake-cutting, where attendees shared their heartfelt wishes for Panchhi’s continued health and longevity. Umesh Bhardwaj, the Director of Sangeet Sadan, revealed that Panchhi has entrusted the institution with the rights to showcase and preserve all his musical works. He noted that Sangeet Sadan has made it a tradition to honor Panchhi’s birthday annually through musical festivities, treating him as a cherished elder.
Born on March 29, 1936, in the historic village of Mangalor in Kullu district, Panchhi was a teacher by profession. Throughout his career, he has composed and set to music over 250 songs in various regional dialects, including Kulvi, Dogri, Mandayali, Kangri, and Chambayali. His creations reflect the rich linguistic and cultural tapestry of Himachal Pradesh, conveyed through poetry, ghazals, and folk melodies.
His works are celebrated for their emotional resonance, exploring themes of love, nature, and local traditions. Notable among his creations are traditional Baramasa songs and lyrical pieces that continue to touch the hearts of audiences.
The event also showcased cultural performances, with local artists delivering heartfelt renditions of Panchhi’s songs. The auditorium was filled with the enchanting sounds of his popular compositions, honoring his lasting musical heritage.
During the celebration, senior litterateur and President of Suket Sahitya Parishad Gangaram Raji, along with writers Rattan Lal and Surendra Mishra, presented Panchhi with a traditional shawl and cap. Many distinguished figures, including music expert Vidyasagar from Kullu, members of the Old Boys Band, and other cultural personalities, attended the event. Panchhi’s family members also expressed their warm wishes.
Umesh Bhardwaj and Isha Dogra from Sangeet Sadan described Panchhi as not just a remarkable creator but also a beacon of inspiration for the younger generation. They emphasized that his life and works will continue to shape and influence the future of regional literature and music.
The program concluded with performances by Sangeet Sadan artists, celebrating K.R. Panchhi’s enduring legacy within the cultural landscape of Himachal Pradesh.
